JOB PURPOSE 

 

Occupational Therapists use activities with specific goals to ensure maximum recovery and optimal independence of individuals with disease or injury within a multi-disciplinary setting. This may be a rotational or non-rotational post within a multi-disciplinary setting. The Occupational Therapist may coordinate projects and supervise undergraduate students and others in the department. The Occupational Therapist should be able to manage complex cases independently. The Occupational Therapist is required to provide guidance to juniors for assessment and treatment of patients with multiple complexities. The Occupational Therapist functioning at this level may assume the role of a Team Coordinator with authority from the Head of Department. 

 

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 

 

Clinical Practice & Improvement 

 

Quality Care  

Maintain consistent standard of care in  

  1. Conducting Assessment and Therapy Planning 
  • Review patient’s electronic case notes, take patient history and interpret assessment results 
  • Conducts assessments and selects appropriate and specific outcome measures at therapist’s own discretion 
  • Formulate patient-centered and SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timely) goals in collaboration with patient and relevant stakeholders 
  • Communicate assessment results, therapy plans, goals and outcome measures to patients and other relevant stakeholders 
  • Document results of case history taking, assessment results, therapy plans, goals and outcome measures 
  1. Performing therapy interventions 
  • Occupational Therapy intervention is planned and delivered to facilitate patients’ occupational performance based on medical condition(s), indications and contraindications, findings, goals and treatment plans. Occupational Therapy interventions may include: 
  1. Sensory-motor retraining; cognitive and perceptual training; application of physical, electro-therapeutic and heat agents; functional and re-training activities; and prescription, fabrication, provision and/or train the use of orthoses and assistive devices and equipment 
  1. Patient education and caregiver training that empower patients and caregivers with methods to enhance health, mobility and function through self-management strategies 
  1. Professional communication with patients, caregivers, doctors, nurses and other allied healthcare workers 
  1. Documentation of patient assessment, progress and management plans and outcome measures in accordance with the guidelines determined by the department and the hospital 
  • Therapy interventions are based on patient motivation, safety, as well as therapy outcome measures collected 
  • Formulate and review discharge or continuity of care plans in consultation with relevant stakeholders 
  • Evaluate therapy progress and outcomes using selected therapy outcome measures at regular intervals to support patients in achieving their treatment goals 

 

Maintain and manage workload 

  • Achieves target caseload and clinical key achievement areas 
  • Practices according to the clinical standards set by the department, hospital and the Allied Health Professions Council 
  • Adhere to organizational and departmental guidelines 

 

To participate in quality improvement activities/ projects (relating to improvement in clinical care) 

  • Actively participate as a member for quality improvement projects at Department level 

 

Safe & Effective Care 

Maintain zero harm to patient

  • Adhere to patient quality service according to standards by the hospital and department 
  • Identify and comply with safety practices as determined by the hospital (eg. Infection control workplace health and safety, safe manual handling) 
  • Respond to incidents in compliance with organization’s incident management guidelines 
  • Participate in safety and quality audits 

 

Contribute to maintenance and improvement of safe care 

  • Conduct clinical, safety and quality audits and data analysis 
  • Guide junior staff in responding to incidents in compliance with organizational incident management guidelines  

 

Education 

 

Clinical Supervision & Mentoring 

  • Coach/ Supervise/ Train new and existing staff (JG12 and below) for professional development purposes 
  • Act as resource person for team members to consult and discuss with 
  • Teach techniques in the assessment and management of basic and complex cases 
  • Provide clinical orientation for new joiners and staff new to rotation 
  • May supervise Occupational Therapists on conditional registration 

 

  • May supervise students 
  • Supervise and mentor occupational therapy students 

 

Facilitation of Education 

  • Conduct training and education to intra/inter-department colleagues 
  • Present in continual educational in-services and forums 
  • Provide rating and comments/ remarks during presentation/ in-services 

 

  • May be invited as speaker to local conferences 
  • Able to co-present in workshops and seminars as content expert 

 

  • May assist to conduct professional trainings 

 

Planning & Development 

  • May plan, organize and provide continuing education program in the department 
  • May plan and organize public education events 
  • Develop and review patient and caregiver educational materials 
  • May assist to design, develop, review and update training program and assessment tools 
  • Assist to coordinate clinical attachment programs for occupational therapy, healthcare, medical and/or Work-Learn Technical Diploma (WLTD) students 
  • For supervisory staff: 
  • Develop and review Job Instructions and Job Improvements for department work processes as well as training and equipping staff to carry out their work correctly, safely and conscientiously 
  • Evaluate learners’ performance based on learning outcomes 

 

Research & Innovation

 

Update Knowledge in Practice 

  • Demonstrate ability to critically evaluate research and application to practice during department in-services 
  • May use literature to modify/ develop evidence-based clinical practice guidelines 

 

Develop Research & Innovation 

  • May assist in the design and implementation of research to contribute to evidence-based practice 
  • Under supervision, assist and successfully complete research projects 

 

Create & Communicate Evidence 

  • May present research at local conferences 
  • Present at recognized local and overseas scientific conferences and/or publications in peer-reviewed journals 

 

Leadership & Management   

          

Manage Services & Resources 

Managing existing services and resources to achieve department/ team targets 

  • May function as assistant team coordinator or team coordinator 
  • Plan and provide coverage in team, where necessary 
  • Coordinate existing specialized therapist services  
  • Oversee inventory management processes 
  • Monitor teams’ clinical and non-clinical key performance indicators 
  • May supervise and appraise therapy assistants or junior occupational therapists 
  • Coordinate rosters of therapy teams to enhance manpower usage 

 

May assist to plan, develop, review, improve and implement service/ program/ project to meet department/ hospital targets 

  • Coordinate or assist improvement in current existing therapy services 
  • Assist in the development, promotion or marketing of new clinical services 

 

Collaboration & Communication 

  • May assist in leading of inter-professional/ inter-department/ workgroups to deliver and improve service and care 
  • May participate in inter-department collaborations and projects 
  • May engage inter-professionals in decision making and provide feedback 
  • Manage feedback from internal and/or external stakeholders 

 

Plan, Influence & Lead Change 

  • May assist in the management of information and data to identify potential areas of change for setting the department’s direction 
  • Assist in setting clinical and process standards 
  • Develop work plans for teams to meet the department’s key performance indicators 
  • May evaluate and present findings at department level to influence change 
  • Assist in auditing clinical and process standard 

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS 

 

Education / Training / Experience 

 

Education  

 

Entry Level: 

  1. Recognized Diploma/ Degree in Occupational Therapy 
  1. Non-recognized Diploma/ Degree in Occupational Therapy with relevant qualifications e.g. Qualifying Exams 

 

Experience 

 

At least 2 year of experience as an Occupational Therapist in (in JG12 and below) and demonstrate competencies expected of this job grade.  

 

Professional License (if any) 

Registered with Allied Health Professional Council (AHPC), Singapore with Conditional/ Restricted/ Full Registration 

 

Attributes  

Band 3B AHPs demonstrate a critical understanding of detailed theoretical and practical knowledge, and are progressing from intermediate to advanced level as generalist or specialist. They contribute actively in educator, researcher or leadership roles to meet the goals and needs of the service, and to further their career and professional aspirations.  

They have developed a greater depth and breadth of knowledge and skills in a specific area of clinical practice to perform at a higher level of practice, and possess a higher degree of autonomy to deal with complex problems and unpredictable environments. They are responsible for the identified clinical practice or areas of work. They translate research to practice and may contribute towards research design or implementation.  

They contribute heavily to training and supervision of staff and students, and inter-professional education. They may take on a leadership role, and have some responsibilities for team performance, service development or improvement. 

 

Others  

  1. Possess valid Practicing Certificate from AHPC, Singapore 
  1. Member of the Singapore Occupational Therapist Association (highly recommended)
