Why This Role Matters

The Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) plays a vital role in ensuring patient safety by providing clean, disinfected, and sterile instruments required for clinical and surgical procedures. This role supports the decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilisation, storage, and distribution of medical instruments and supplies across the hospital.

As a Care Support Associate, you will contribute directly to infection prevention and quality patient care by ensuring that medical instruments and sterile supplies are processed accurately, safely, and in compliance with established healthcare standards. Your work forms an essential part of the patient care journey, supporting clinicians and healthcare teams in delivering safe and effective care.

What You Will Drive

1. Decontamination & Instrument Reprocessing

• Practice safe handling of instruments and equipment exposed to blood and bodily fluids.
• Perform quality inspection and quantity verification of instrument sets, loose instruments, utensils, and other reusable items.
• Sort, disassemble, rinse, clean, and disinfect instruments using approved methods and solutions.
• Operate and perform basic troubleshooting of cleaning equipment, including:
• Ultrasonic Washers
• Washer Disinfectors / Cart Washers
• Decontaminate soiled medical and surgical instruments according to established protocols.
• Monitor and record chemical wash solutions to ensure effective decontamination processes.
• Ensure proper care, handling, and maintenance of instruments and equipment.
• Report damaged, broken, or malfunctioning instruments and equipment promptly to supervisors.

2. Assembly, Packing & Sterilisation

• Assemble cleaned instruments according to approved checklists and specifications.
• Package instruments and supplies using appropriate sterilisation and packaging materials, including:
• Loose instruments
• Instrument sets
• Linen
• Utensils
• Identify instruments accurately and apply the appropriate sterilisation method.
• Operate and perform basic troubleshooting of sterilisation equipment, including:
• Steam Sterilisers
• Low-Temperature Sterilisers
• Conduct biological testing and monitor steriliser performance and effectiveness.
• Maintain accurate records of sterilisation activities, biological tests, and steriliser efficacy monitoring.
• Escalate any unexpected events or sterilisation concerns promptly to supervisors.

3. Sterile Supply Management

• Ensure the integrity and sterility of all processed sterile supplies.
• Maintain proper storage conditions and inventory management of sterile items.
• Stock, label, issue, and replenish sterile supplies accurately.
• Apply the "First In, First Out" (FIFO) inventory management methodology.
• Monitor expiry dates and ensure sterile supplies remain compliant with storage requirements.
• Prepare procedure carts and instrument trolleys according to procedural and surgical requirements.
• Support departmental preparedness for emergency activation and Mass Casualty Plan requirements, including stocking of crash carts and emergency supplies.

4. Quality, Safety & Compliance

• Adhere to departmental policies, procedures, and quality standards.
• Comply with infection prevention, standard precautions, workplace safety, and health regulations.
• Maintain strict confidentiality of patient and institutional information.
• Maintain a clean, organised, and safe work environment.
• Promote responsible use of equipment, instruments, and consumable supplies.
• Participate in quality improvement activities to enhance service delivery and operational efficiency.

5. Teamwork & Operational Support

• Work under the supervision of trained CSSD Technicians, nurses, or designated supervisors.
• Collaborate effectively with team members from CSSD, Endoscopy Centre Reprocessing Room, and other clinical departments.
• Serve as a resource and support person for new staff and team members where required.
• Perform additional duties and projects assigned by supervisors in support of departmental and organisational objectives.

6. Continuous Learning & Professional Development

• Participate actively in on-the-job training, in-service education, and continuous learning programmes.
• Attend mandatory and developmental training programmes as required.
• Contribute to team discussions, meetings, and initiatives aimed at improving patient care and work processes.

What You Bring

Education & Experience

• Secondary School education - minimum GCE N / O Level / ITE certificate or equivalent is preferred 
• Certificate in Health Care Service or equivalent is preferred 
• Knowledge of basic computer skills 
• Ability to speak and understand English  
• Preferably 5 - 6 years of experience in healthcare setting
