Job Description:

Medical Social Work (MSW) provides competent, evidence-informed psychiatric social work services with growing autonomy, applying broad theoretical knowledge and defined clinical skills to assess, plan, and deliver care. As a practitioner progressing from novice to intermediate level, the role consolidates clinical experience, exercises sound clinical judgment, and actively seeks new knowledge to enhance practice and contribute to service improvement. The MSW supports supervision or training of staff and students where appropriate, and may be entrusted with additional responsibilities in service delivery, resource management, and selected educator, researcher, or leadership functions to build capability and prepare for higher levels of practice.

  1. Conduct health profession (e.g Dr, nurses, AHPs) education and/or training (i.e. inservice) to intra-department colleagues
  2. Facilitate education (i.e. group sessions/ public forum/ workshops) to patients/ public.
  3. Conduct health profession (e.g Dr, nurses, AHPs) education and/or training (i.e. workshops and seminars) with support.

  1. Organize, coordinate and provide continuing education to colleagues with guidance.
  2. Develop education resources (i.e. training manuals, patient handouts/education content) with guidance.
  3. Review/ update curriculum and assessments for learners (i.e. students, AHP, HCPs) with guidance.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. To take on duties for CARE or Emergency Services duties when on call. 
  2. To be involved in ad hoc projects as and when required

 

Tasks:

  • Carry an assigned caseload of inpatient and outpatient cases within designated service areas.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of work done, in accordance with departmental and hospital documentation requirements.
  • Attend to referrals and provide social work services, including:

a) Conducting psychosocial assessments for new admissions and referred cases.

b) Identifying psychosocial needs and following up on appropriate interventions and referrals under guidance where necessary.

c) Completing all required documentation in line with departmental and hospital policies.

d) Providing regular updates to the multidisciplinary treatment team through participation in daily ward or case discussions.

e) Conducting family psycho‑education sessions for caregivers of newly diagnosed patients and referred cases.

  • Participate as a team member in one designated programme or service at the team level.
  • Areas of involvement may include one of the following:

a) Charity Fund or Financial Assistance Programmes

b) Caregiver Services and Support Programmes

c) Group Work

d) Information and Referral Services

e) Crisis Workgroups

f) Networking and care Coordination Projects

  • Carry out assigned tasks and responsibilities within the programme under the guidance of senior staff.
  • Attend to complaints, feedback, or external enquiries related to cases handled, in consultation with supervisors as appropriate.
  • Participate in training sessions, talks, or educational activities organised at the department or hospital levels to enhance professional knowledge and skills.
  • Contribute to new services, programmes, or work improvement projects as a team member, supporting implementation and evaluation activities as assigned.

Requirements:

 

Educational and Professional Requirements

  1. Basic or Honours Degree in Social Work or Master in Counselling
